In the real world, those of us with the strongest moral
compass can still do horrible things and those defined as psychopaths can still
have moments of incredible humanity. Our lives are in effect a choose your own
adventure story. We are all different and we must all make constant decisions
that have an impact on our lives, those around us and the world at large.
I believe this also needs to apply to those who reside in the Kingdom in Darkness. A healthy amount of kindness, compassion and courage are required to have an affinity with magic, especially leading up to a rebirth. However, this does not in any way inoculate them from the pitfalls of lust, pride and wrath. Everybody is thus an imperfect character and becomes a little more relatable because we are too.
